About Grandma Ruby

Ruby was born in 1909 in a small town in Georgia. She was the first female bank teller in town and perhaps one of few in Georgia. During WWII, she worked in the office of a Company that was called on to manufacture defense materials for the war. Later, she worked for years in the cosmetics department of a major Department Store in Atlanta.

Her mother was an excellent cook and Ruby learned well. Ruby lived on six acres of fertile land that yielded fruit and vegetables in abundance so she had the pressure cooker going full tilt at all times and was able to feed the family from the Mason jars that filled the cupboard.

She cooked three meals a day for the family. Rising every morning early before walking to the bus stop to catch her bus for town, she would cook breakfast and make lunches for her husband and three sons and then get dressed for work.

Her Sunday meals were something else. Sometimes they would include several meats and invariably cornbread, rolls and biscuits and her desserts were a real treat… cakes, cakes, cakes.

Can’t say that the great healthy food was responsible but she did live to the age of 103 and all three of her sons went to college on football scholarships.
